WHAT ARE DENTAL SEALANTS

Dental sealants are made up of a thin plastic coat that is placed on molars and premolars. Usually used for children between the ages of six and eighteen years, dental sealants protect the teeth from tooth decay.

Molars and premolars have a lot of fine grooves on their surfaces in which food particles get lodged. Left untreated, bacteria starts growing in these grooves and eventually causes cavities. Dental sealants can help prevent the formation of cavities in these teeth.

HOW DO DENTAL SEALANTS WORK?

Dental sealants coat the surface of molars and premolars, giving them a layer of protection. The sealant prevents food from getting lodged in the teeth and also protects the teeth from harmful acids released by bacteria.

HOW IS THE DENTAL SEALANT APPLIED?

At Smooth Dental Group, Dr. Elizabeth Tran is a top provider in applying dental sealants for children and adults. Children can get the sealant as soon as their teeth have protruded from the gum and the full surface is visible. Adults who do not already have any fillings can also ask for dental sealants.

During the process, the tooth is first cleaned and dried, after which an acidic solution is applied to the tooth. The acidic solution makes the surface of the tooth rough which helps the sealant bind better. The acid is then rinsed off and the tooth dried again. Next, the sealant is applied and is hardened with the help of a blue light. The procedure is painless, does not take very long, and the results last for about ten years.

Dr. Tran will inform you about post-treatment checkups to ensure the sealant is not wearing off or chipped.
